What is Chatbot?

A chatbot is software that converses with people in text — on a website, in an app or on messaging channels like WhatsApp.

Rule-based chatbots follow scripted buttons and decision trees. AI chatbots use language models to understand free-text questions and, when grounded in a company's own content, answer them accurately and hand over to a person when needed.
