Google AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience, the full-page version of the AI Overviews that appear above regular results. Google said at I/O 2026 that it had passed a billion monthly users, and in October 2026 it announced changes to how it links out. If your traffic from informational queries has been flat or falling, this is where those clicks are going.
What changed in October 2026
- Inline links are more common. Google says links placed on the words inside an AI Mode response now appear much more often, and that these get higher engagement than links listed beside the answer.
- An "official sites" block is being tested. For tasks that depend on one or two official sources (renewing a licence, a company's own pricing or support page), Google is testing a block of official-site links above the AI answer.
- Timely news carousels are expanding to more countries and languages.
Google has also said plainly that optimising for AI search is SEO. Its guidance does not require llms.txt or "chunking" as separate steps. Treat any vendor selling a separate "AI Mode ranking factor" with caution.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO in AI Mode
| What wins | What you do | |
|---|---|---|
| SEO (retrieval) | Being in the index and relevant for the fan-out sub-queries AI Mode runs | Crawlable HTML, fast pages, clean canonicals, topical clusters, links |
| AEO (the answer) | A passage that answers one sub-question completely | Question headings, answer in the first two sentences, tables and steps |
| GEO (the citation) | Being the source the model trusts enough to link inline | Clear entity data, original information, corroboration on other sites |
For the full GEO playbook see our generative engine optimization guide. Below are the AI Mode-specific moves.
1. Win the fan-out, not just the head query
AI Mode breaks a question into many related sub-queries and pulls passages for each. A page that ranks for "best CMMS software" but has nothing on cost, implementation time or mobile use loses those sub-answers to someone else. Map the 8–15 follow-up questions a buyer would ask and answer each one under its own heading. Answer pages like our question-per-page library exist for exactly this.
2. Write passages worth an inline link
Inline links attach to specific claims. The passages that earn them share four traits:
- A specific, checkable statement: a number, threshold, date, named method or price range, not a generality.
- Self-contained: it still makes sense quoted alone, so name the subject instead of writing "it".
- Original: your own data, test, framework or practitioner detail. Google's 2026 updates favour information gain; a paraphrase of the top results has nothing to cite.
- Easy to extract: short paragraphs, comparison tables, numbered steps.
3. Claim the "official site" slot for your own brand tasks
If Google is testing an official-sites block for single-source tasks, make it unmistakable that your domain is the official source for your brand, products and support:
- Organization schema with
url, logoandsameAslinks to your verified profiles. - Dedicated, crawlable pages for pricing, support, contact, documentation and status. Do not bury them in PDFs or JavaScript-only widgets.
- Consistent naming across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
4. Make sure Google can actually render you
Single-page apps still lose here. We found our own Angular site served the homepage shell, with the homepage canonical, on hundreds of article URLs until we prerendered them. Check with "View source", not DevTools: if the answer text is not in the raw HTML, plenty of AI crawlers will never see it.
5. Trust signals still gate citations
Author pages with real credentials, visible publish and update dates, references to primary sources, and a secure site (HTTPS, no malware, no injected spam) all feed the trust judgement. You can check the security side in seconds with our free website security audit, and the content side with the E-E-A-T signal checker.
How to measure AI Mode visibility
Search Console reports AI Mode and AI Overview clicks and impressions inside the normal Performance report rather than as a separate filter, so watch impressions on question-style queries alongside click-through rate. Supplement that with manual checks of your 20 most valuable questions each month, noting whether you are cited inline, in the side panel or not at all.

Frequently asked questions
How do I rank in Google AI Mode?
Rank in normal search first, because AI Mode retrieves from Google's index. Then answer the related sub-questions a searcher would ask, each in a self-contained, specific passage, mark up your organization and content with schema, and publish original information worth citing.
Is AI Mode SEO different from regular SEO?
Google says optimising for AI search is still SEO. The emphasis shifts toward passage-level answers, covering follow-up questions and being a trusted, clearly identified source.
Do I need llms.txt for Google AI Mode?
No. Google's guidance does not require llms.txt. It can still help other AI tools understand your site, but it is not a Google ranking requirement.
What are inline links in AI Mode?
Links placed on specific words or claims inside the AI-generated answer, pointing to the source page that supports that claim. Google reported in October 2026 that they now appear much more often and get higher engagement.
Can I track AI Mode traffic in Search Console?
AI Mode clicks and impressions are counted within the standard Search Console Performance report. Track question-style queries and supplement with manual spot checks.
